Patient Libby Helps Amanda Master Alfie’s Leash Training

Smart Libby Educates Amanda on Training Alfie for Walks

Amanda clipped the leash onto Alfie’s collar and smiled nervously. Alfie was a cheerful young dog with endless energy, and every walk seemed to turn into a tug-of-war. Amanda had only recently become Alfie’s owner, and she was still learning how to handle him properly.

“Ready?” Amanda asked.

Alfie immediately lunged toward the gate, pulling so hard that Amanda nearly lost her balance.

Standing nearby, Libby chuckled. Libby had years of experience training dogs and had offered to help Amanda learn the basics.

“First lesson,” Libby said kindly. “Don’t let Alfie decide where the walk begins. You need to stay calm and show him that you’re leading.”

Amanda nodded and listened carefully. She knew Libby understood dogs much better than she did.

“So what should I do?” Amanda asked.

“When he pulls, stop moving,” Libby explained. “The moment he relaxes the leash, praise him and continue walking.”

Amanda followed the advice. At first, Alfie seemed confused. He pulled forward, but Amanda stopped. After a few seconds, Alfie turned back toward her.

“Good boy!” Amanda said.

“Exactly,” Libby replied. “Reward the behavior you want.”

They continued down the sidewalk. Whenever Alfie pulled, Amanda stopped. Whenever he walked politely beside her, she praised him.

After several minutes, Amanda noticed a difference.

“He’s actually calming down!” she said excitedly.

Libby smiled. “Dogs learn through consistency. You don’t need to be harsh. You just need to be clear.”

As they reached a small park, Alfie walked beside Amanda with a loose leash.

“I never realized training could be this simple,” Amanda admitted.

“It’s simple, but it takes patience,” Libby said. “Remember, Alfie is still learning, and so are you.”

Amanda appreciated the advice. Because she was inexperienced, she trusted Libby’s guidance and paid attention to every tip.

By the end of the walk, both Amanda and Alfie seemed more confident. Amanda thanked Libby warmly.

“You taught me a lot today,” she said.

“You did the hard work,” Libby replied. “Keep practicing, and every walk will get easier.”

Amanda looked down at Alfie and smiled. For the first time, she felt like she truly knew how to guide her dog.
