Rose and Rina: A Difficult Weaning Moment
Rose sat quietly by the small wooden chair near the window, watching the afternoon light spill across the room. Rina stood nearby, shifting her feet and holding her stomach. She was no longer a tiny baby, and everyone around them kept saying it was time for her to grow out of old habits. Rose had heard it so many times that the words began to echo in her mind even when no one was speaking.
Rina hesitated, then walked closer. “I’m hungry,” she said softly, her voice small but steady. She looked up at Rose with the same trusting eyes she had always had. “Can I… please?”
Rose tightened her hands together. She knew what Rina was asking for without needing more words. It was the same request that had once been so simple, so natural. But things were changing now. Rina was growing older, and Rose had been told again and again that she needed to help her become more independent.
“You can eat something from the kitchen,” Rose replied gently, trying to keep her voice calm. She pointed toward the small table where fruit and bread were laid out.
Rina frowned, her stomach growling quietly. “But I don’t want that right now,” she whispered. She stepped closer, tugging lightly at Rose’s sleeve. “Just a little… please.”
Rose felt a wave of emotion she didn’t fully know how to handle. She cared deeply for Rina, and hearing her discomfort made her heart ache. But she also remembered the advice from others, the encouragement to guide Rina toward growing up.
“You’re getting older now,” Rose said after a pause. “We’re trying something new, remember?”
Rina lowered her gaze. She didn’t fully understand why something that once made her feel safe was now being refused. She stayed silent for a moment, then slowly walked toward the table, still feeling hungry but unsure.
Rose watched her go, conflicted and quiet. She knew this was part of helping Rina grow, even if it didn’t feel easy.
